Mirra Andreeva’s incredible run in the Madrid Open continued with another impressive victory, this time over Poland’s Magda Linette. The 16-year-old Russian, who was given a wildcard for the event, celebrated her birthday in style with a confident 6-3 6-3 win over the world number 19.
Andreeva’s triumph over Linette comes after she caused upsets in the previous rounds, beating world number 14 Beatriz Haddad Maia and 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez. The world number 194 will now face second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the next round and will be hoping to continue her remarkable form and cause another upset.
Sabalenka, who is currently ranked number four in the world, beat Columbia’s Camila Osorio 6-4 7-5 to advance earlier on Saturday. The Belarusian will be a tough opponent for Andreeva, but the Russian teenager has already proved that she is capable of beating some of the world’s top players.
With nothing to lose, Andreeva will be playing with confidence and will be hoping to cause another shock in the next round. Whatever the result, Andreeva’s performances in Madrid have been a breath of fresh air, and she is a player to watch in the future.
