Anastasia Potapova pulled off a major upset at the Miami Open by defeating American teenager Coco Gauff in a thrilling third-round match. Despite losing the first set in a tiebreak, Potapova mounted a resilient defense, saving 10 of the 13 break points she faced.
The Russian player then found her rhythm and secured a hard-fought victory, winning 6-7(8) 7-5 6-2. The win sets up a meeting with China’s Zheng Qinwen in the next round.
Following the match, Potapova expressed her belief in herself and her determination to fight through the tough moments in the match.
The 27th seed on the WTA list produced some of her best tennis to come out on top and grinned widely as she fired down an unreturnable serve to secure the win. The victory will no doubt give Potapova a boost of confidence as she looks ahead to her next challenge in the tournament.
