Francesca Jones’ impressive run at the Copa Colsanitas came to an end in the semi-finals after a straight-sets defeat to Tatjana Maria. Despite losing to the defending champion, the 22-year-old Briton can be proud of her achievements in Bogota.
World No 817 Jones caused a stir by beating seeded players Nuria Parrizas Diaz and Laura Pigossi on her way to the last four. Jones, who has a congenital condition, fought hard against the second seed, but Maria’s experience proved to be the difference. The rain delay only added to Jones’ difficulties, and Maria eventually won 6-3 6-4.
Jones’ early break in the second set gave her a glimmer of hope of making a comeback against Maria, but the German veteran quickly responded by breaking back.
The set remained on serve when a rain delay forced the players off the court, and the organizers announced a delay until at least 3.45 pm. Unfortunately for Jones, Maria regained the momentum after the delay, winning a crucial hold before breaking the Briton in the ninth game to seal the match.
Jones’s success in Bogota is a testament to her determination and hard work. The LTA’s Pro Scholarship Programme helped her to develop her talent, and her impressive performance in Colombia shows that she has a bright future in the sport. Despite her physical challenges, Jones has shown that she can compete at the highest level.
