Emma Raducanu, the rising star of British tennis, has revealed that she is suffering from a wrist injury that she sustained last year and that it has “started to flare back up.” However, despite the setback, Raducanu remains hopeful of playing her opening-round match at Indian Wells on Thursday.
The British No. 1 is scheduled to face Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in California, but speaking to the media on Wednesday, she was unable to confirm whether she would be able to take the court.
Raducanu, who hasn’t played since the Australian Open in January, withdrew from a mixed doubles exhibition match that she had been due to play with compatriot Cameron Norrie on Wednesday. The injury is a blow for Raducanu, who has been in impressive form this season, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open and the third round at Wimbledon.
Raducanu’s injury has cast doubt over her participation in the Indian Wells tournament, but the 19-year-old remains determined to compete. She has been receiving treatment for the injury and will assess her condition ahead of Thursday’s match.
The rising star is highly regarded in the tennis world and has shown tremendous potential since her breakthrough at Wimbledon in 2021. Her withdrawal from the mixed doubles exhibition match may have been a precautionary measure to ensure that she is fit and ready for the main tournament. Tennis fans around the world will be hoping that Raducanu makes a full recovery and is able to showcase her talent at Indian Wells.
