World number one Iga Swiatek showcased her championship credentials once again at Indian Wells, securing a spot in the semi-finals with a commanding straight-sets victory over Romania’s Sorana Cirstea.
The 21-year-old Polish superstar, who won the French and US Opens last year, defeated the world No. 83 with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-3. Swiatek won eight consecutive games during the match, leaving Cirstea no chance to make a comeback.
Up next for Swiatek is a highly-anticipated encounter against Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. The Kazakhstani player battled through a grueling quarterfinal match against Karolina Muchova to secure her place in the semi-finals.
Rybakina has already beaten Swiatek earlier this year at the Australian Open, making the upcoming match an exciting prospect for tennis fans worldwide. Swiatek is aiming to become only the second woman, after Martina Navratilova in 1990 and 1991, to win back-to-back Indian Wells titles, and will have to overcome Rybakina to reach the final.
