Dominic Thiem admitted that ever since he won US Open in 2020, he had not had the same motive to play tennis as before. However, he still believes that he can play at a high level and compete.
Dominic won his first grand slam title in 2020 after he defeated Alexander Zverev in a great comeback. It was his fourth grand slam finals match, and back then, he stated that he hoped he would play looser in grand slam tournaments. However, that was not the case.
His form went on a downhill spiral at the start of 2021, and last year, he fell below the 300 seed on the ATP rankings after his prolonged wrist injury recovery.
On the question of whether or not his competitive fire was extinguished after the wrist injury, he had this to say:
“It got extinguished after the US Open. But we’ve already talked about it. I don’t want to blame myself for that. There are players that get better after big successes and win the next grand slam title right afterward. That wasn’t the case for me; I’m different.”
