Stan Wawrinka, the Swiss tennis star, overcame a second-set meltdown to secure a hard-fought victory over seventh seed Holger Rune at the BNP Paribas Open on Monday. In what was a thrilling encounter between the experienced Wawrinka and the rising 19-year-old Rune, it was the former who eventually emerged victorious after a grueling three-set match.
With this win, Wawrinka earned his 550th tour-level victory and reached the fourth round at an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time since 2020.
Despite taking a commanding lead in the first set, Wawrinka faced a determined Rune, who refused to back down even after being pushed to the brink of defeat. Wawrinka missed out on several opportunities to secure victory in the second set, with the young Dane taking advantage of the Swiss player’s mistakes to level the match.
However, Wawrinka showed great mental fortitude and rallied in the third set, ultimately breaking Rune’s serve to claim victory in a tense final game. The hard-fought win is a testament to Wawrinka’s skill and experience, as he continues to be a force to be reckoned with on the professional tennis circuit.
